The Story of Freedom in Christ

Living Free Ministries is related to Freedom in Christ, the "mother" organization.  We are ministry associates of FICM.   Check the "LFM Story" tab to read the LFM history.  See also the links below to understand the connections of LFM and also of Ken and Carolee.

Dr. Neil T. Anderson founded Freedom in Christ in 1988 while he served as chairman of the practical theology department of Talbot School of Theology, La Mirada, CA.  Dr. Anderson observed that Christian students struggling in their faith had several common issues: they didn’t understand what it meant to be “in Christ” and they weren’t experiencing that “Abba, Father!” connection to God as His children. They also were not winning the spiritual battles for their minds.

In response to these crucial needs and the struggles of God’s people to experience freedom in Christ, Dr. Anderson wrote Victory Over the Darkness and The Bondage Breaker, each of which has sold over one million copies.

Dr. Anderson also developed a simple, transferable ministry tool by which one follower of Christ could sit down and help another struggling believer to walk in freedom. That tool, The Steps to Freedom in Christ, has been used to help people around the world find their freedom from negative thoughts and life controlling issues.

The Present Problem
Most of God’s people are spiritually stuck, running in place – expending a lot of energy but getting nowhere fast. Some are painfully aware of their struggles and yearn to be free from the guilt, shame, anxiety, fear, abuse and addictions that are suffocating their souls. Others are largely clueless … even complacent about their struggles … having accepted as normal a subnormal life in Christ, where faith is lived out on Sunday mornings but is largely irrelevant the rest of the week.
God’s Solution
Believers need help to “lay aside every encumbrance and the sin that so easily entangles” them so that they can run with endurance the race set before them, with their eyes firmly fixed on Jesus (Hebrews 12:1,2). Freedom is necessary for believers in Christ to become growing, fruitful disciples, but is the “missing ingredient” in most Christians’ lives. Jesus Christ has come to bind up broken hearts and set captives free (Isaiah 61:1) to become growing, fruitful disciples. Followers of Christ desperately need to understand who they are in Christ; make that “Abba! Father!” connection with God as Father; and win the spiritual battles for their minds.
Our Mission
The mission of FICM-USA is to resource and equip Christians in America to experience spiritual freedom and spread that freedom to others. Click the following link to view the brand new FICM brochure: view the PDF.
Our Vision
The vision of FICM-USA is to establish and nurture a growing network of Community Freedom Ministries all across the nation.
What is a Community Freedom Ministry?
A Community Freedom Ministry (CFM) is an environment of grace and truth, started by an individual, couple or group of individuals under church authority seeking to establish and coordinate a “freedom presence” in their home church or hometown.
This “freedom presence” involves teaching the biblical message of freedom (as taught in Dr. Neil Anderson’s books); taking people through The Steps to Freedom in Christ and; training individuals to use The Steps to Freedom in Christ. How Does FICM Train People to Start & Coordinate CFMs?
The primary vehicle for training CFM Coordinators is CFM University. Utilizing state-of-the-art online technology (through the “Moodle” learning management system), students are required to take an entrance exam, two courses … CFM 101 and CFM 201 … and also attend a four-day, in-person Practicum in order to be equipped to undertake the development of a CFM, as well as to fulfill the training requirements for becoming part of the CFM NETWORK. CFM University is academically invigorating, visually engaging and deeply rewarding as the Lord touches students’ hearts through the challenging content and rich relationships developed. What is the CFM NETWORK?
Starting and growing a Community Freedom Ministry (CFM) is hard work. Watching lives transformed by Jesus Christ, the truth, is deeply satisfying but it can be draining as well. We are exhorted in Scripture to “encourage one another day after day” (Hebrews 3:13) and so the CFM NETWORK was designed to help meet that very real need.
The CFM NETWORK is a growing group of individuals all across the nation who have finished the training requirements of CFM University and have applied for and been accepted as endorsed volunteers (Community Freedom Ministry Associates or CFMAs). CFM NETWORK participants receive discounts on FICM resources as well as a variety of other perks. There is no charge to be part of the CFM NETWORK.
